Turtle-Watching Tips to Maximise Leatherback Turtle Nesting Tours

Here at Mt. Plaisir, Turtle-Watching is one of the highlights of staying at our eco-restort. But, while it’s an enjoyable pastime, it must be undertaken with care and caution so as not to disrupt the Leatherback turtles during their elaborate nesting rituals. Want to enjoy your turtle tour responsibly? Here are some rules to keep in mind.

Mt. Plasir Turtle-Watching Tips

Whenever we conduct Leatherback turtle nesting tours, we are mindful of the fact that these majestic giants are an endangered species. For that reason, it’s crucial for visitors to avoid disturbing the animals and to follow practices that protect and enhance their nesting sites. As such, you should:

  • Always use an experienced tour guide who understands the terrain and can mitigate any perceived or unexpected risks to the turtles and human life.
  • Wear comfortable shoes at all times, and bring warm clothing for nighttime tours.
  • Limit your food consumption and the use of disposable wares during your wait.
  • Never attempt to feed the sea turtles.
  • Avoid using flashlights or any other devices that emit white light, since they can cause distress to the turtles.
  • Only take flash-free photos. Cameras equipped with infrared lenses are preferred.
  • Limit movements and sounds. Turtles are very easily startled and will return to the sea without laying their eggs if they sense any disturbance. Your tour guide will relay where it is best to stand, usually remaining behind the nesting mother and out of her line of sight. If a turtle shows any signs of distress, move away immediately.
  • Allow hatchlings to emerge and proceed to the ocean on their own. Avoid touching or redirecting them unless it is an extreme case of imminent danger. Follow the advice of your tour guide.
  • Do not sit on the sea turtles or attempt to lift or touch them in any manner. For activities that involve turtle-tagging, your local tour guide will also give instructions.
